Hi All, Long time since i've posted on here! What with buying the new bike, i want to get it insured against theft. I have done a bit of Googling but thought some of you may have insurance on yours so may have some recommendations on companies to use and may even have experience on what they are like to claim from? Although i hope not! My home insurer will insure the bike against theft when at home but not when out and about. Now i would never leave the bike unattended when out but these things do happen so i would like insurance that will cover the bike at home, when out and about and also abroad if possible (even if its only a short add on) as i will be going to the alps in August. Ive noticed as well some companies will also cover accessories. Helmets, other armour etc. This isn't essential but would be a nice extra especially considering how much i've just spent on a new full facer Any recommendations all?

Hi Niall,
a few years ago the preferred insurer was Marks & Spencer but I think they are not as good now (although I'm open to opinion).
Mine are insured on the house insurance and the garage is deadlocked and alarmed. I don't have insurance for out and about but don't leave it unattended.
Alps is different. I wouldn't worry so much about the bike, but you definitely need insuring (not a joke, everyone needs accident insurance in the alps). Best providers are snowcard or dogtag.
I know you are going with Sam and Grant but Sam's unsure of the location - where are you going and have you checked out my latest video?

Cheers Rich I was going to use DogTag for accident insurance in the Alps. Everyone i have spoken to has recommended them highly. We are going with Trail Addiction to Les Arcs. Don't know if you have ever been over that way? Yeah i've seen your video. Cant wait to get out there now!

Yup, been with the big TA many times and so has Sam (he's been twice I think). Les Arcs is great and I always use Dogtag for me and Sam.
Well, back to insurance, anyone else any thoughts?

Well, back to insurance, anyone else any thoughts? Your bike may be covered under your holiday insurance for the duration of your trip. I still find it amazing how insurance companies decide that a bicycle can be given a classification of insurance that renders it suitable only for keeping within your fenceline (but whilst within that fenceline it doesn't have to be locked). Quite bizarre to think that anyone would actually go for a ride! You could add bicycles to the 'all risks' element of your policy. If they start asking about quotes from bikes shops (who charge of course, just like a doctors letter), bear in mind this will be every year and they will likely devalue your bicycle before you ever would, so move on to an insurance company who does new for old and doesn't make a song and dance about cycles (usually they will have a £1000 article limit included if they are reasonable). Failing that, specific cycle insurance can be obtained from the usual places, try also the CTC website/forum for a rundown of the current contenders (plenty of cyclists touring abroad with their bikes soon highlight the best policies). "I never leave it" is tricky in practice. H.

I have mine covered with home insurance too with Bank of Scotland, but that covers out and about. I had to get my bikes valued by the local LBS (if you can't provide receipts). they were the best value out there by a long margin. i also have safety doors, alarm & CCTV and keep the bikes always locked to avoid smash and grab

Thanks all Our old home insurer used to cover the bike fine. In fact it was a pleasure to deal with them when my old PA was nicked all them years ago (as much as a pleasure it can be anyway!). They just wanted a picture of the bike so they could see the parts on it and guesstimate a value which surprisingly was far more than it cost to build. They stopped offering that though and then strictly said they will only cover it for theft from the house.
