Right, there's a general consensus amongst the roadie element of this forum that roadie's don't do EPO anymore, the new drug of choice is CERA (stimulates the kidneys to produce EPO which in turn stimulates the bone marrow to increase the creation of red blood cells. More red blood cells allow the body to carry more oxygen and so increases an athlete's performance). In line with the theme of cheating generally seen in roadie's some more cheating was suggested in the form of those interested to ride the L2B route early on the day of the BHF CHARITY ride to Brighton. For those cheats interested, the meeting point is Carshalton Ponds at 6-30am on the 21st June. Count me in!

I'm keen, but playing devil's advocate is the best day to do it it on?
I'd see positives as some partial road closures, refreshment stops etc, generally fun atmosphere,
Negatives include too may slow people, difficult return leg unless you plan a completely different route back, slightly dubious morality of 'hijacking' a charity event that is mostly designed for cyclists considerably less experienced or fit than us..
Thoughts?

Positives as you say is road closure and atmosphere
Would take a different route back via Horsham/ Crawley way
maybe even park a car somewhere along the return route the night before
If we leave at 6.15-6.30 from the Carlshalton Pond or similar we should avoid the crowd
We can always donate a small amount to BHF if it makes you feel better
The early starters will be fit

Coun't me in !
I think we could all make it, fitness wise. The thing was sold out ages ago so we couldn't join properly even if we wanted to. So the donation idea might be ghod to help us to sleep better !?
Flix, you live near me don't you ? (Worcester Park area) I could join you on the way to the meeting point ?
I think I will need a large fish and chips twice to avoid badly bonking but could be fun if the weathers good !!

Ive done the L2B twice. Both times we parked a van a few miles outside Brighton the night before and then all drove home. Except one guy who scorned us for being 'cheating women' and rode back again. None of us were registered and as the route passed the house of one of the people I rode with who lived in Banstead, we all met there and just joined in the flow of riders after we had breakfast. Atmoshpere was brilliant, lots of sunshine, people waving at you along the route, and a quiet smug feeling as lots of people on halfords specials cooing over our 'professional' bikes. (shame we couldnt ride them like pros too... All mountain bikes btw, no road bikes amongst us). And plenty of pub stops along the way too. The only real hard part of the route was both times Ditchling beacon going against the headwind. I have a lasting memory of Ditchling Beacon. Struggling half way up, legs burning and thinking about using shanks pony, some old boy on an old Claud Butler race bike in full historic road race kit including leather bananna crash hat over an upturned peaked cap and woolly shorts appearing next to me as fresh as a daisy saying "Come on old bean, dont give up. Want a push?" and then much to the amusement of my friends, gave me a firm shove up the hill, then pedalled off into the distance like he was going downhill. When we got to brighton we were directed along Madiera drive with all the other riders and we were each given a finishers medal when we went under the finish line arch. Which (with slight guilt in retrospect, but none at the time) we all shamelessly accepted. The weather makes the day. Hope its sunny for you all this year

I dont think I could keep up with you very quick boys on a road bike, my total road mileage is only about 50 but if others from the group are going I would be interested. I have the SDW with the BHF the following weekend so the miles would be good.

I registered to do the ride and my start time is 7.30 It is something I always wanted to do, I understand that it fills up quick and that others join the ride unofficially. If you want to make a donation as Cas suggested, you could do so via my BHF fundraising page: www.justgiving.com/nickcocksedge Thanks if you do sponsor me.

I'm registered to do the ride and this will be my 3rd year in a row and the 5th time I've done it. I'm not going to post a link to my sponsorship site because I can't be arsed to collect money and you pay for the privilege to do the ride! I can hear mutterings of what's the point...... Anyhows, 6.30am is a good time to start from Carshalton and you miss the fantastic ride from Clapham. This year I start at 6am, which really means I start at 5am-ish from Teddington since the trains don't run on a Sunday before 7am. Last year I started at 9.30am and it was horrific. First the run from Clapham was chocked full of riders of differing abilities but really there were too many people. In the first hour I travelled 8 miles, which put me in a great frame of mind (54 divided by 8 = a bloody long time). I also witnessed 3 crashes and numerous people bloodied on the side of the road, the worst of the 3 crashes I saw was going down hill when one rider tried to over take another rider who was gayly going about her business. She gently glided to the side of the road but the other rider was committed and they came in contact. This resulted in the poor lady being catapulted into the hedges, the impact was big enough for one of her shoes to come flying off. I can't honestly say why I do the ride, I suppose because it's there. One year I would like to do the ride with some mates, stopping at pubs and having a picnic, but I'm certain my road mentality will take over 'Going to catch that guy in front and then your next.' Might see you there…sweaty guy on a Boardman Hybrid.

you pay for the privilege to do the ride! The entry fee covers organisational costs ONLY (and they are naturally massive for such an event) - BHF make no money from your entry fee. Any rider entering L2B should at least have a whipround - it's only fair. There's 364 other days in the year when that route is free to ride

Right 21st June is a rest day for me (at the moment), my knees are not in good shape, it took a 10 minute £180 appointment to point that out and a £800 MRI scan on 2nd June to confirm, apparently no gristle left under my left knee and not much under right knee. I think that leaves me the option of driving down for lifts back..... + I have done it 18+ times now and no need to anymore lol

OK just to firm things up a bit
So far we have
Muddy Flix Terry LLoydy Twelve Me Tony ( my mate )
Are joining us for this. Any one else?
I still suggest we start very early, otherwise we won't miss the traffic, but as all of us are coming from the other side of Carlshalton Pond I don't see the point of cycling there only to cycle back.
Therefor I suggest 2 new meeting points
Either at my house which is close to Cheam Village and on the way for most of you at 6 am for a 6: 15 start or at Belmont Bus Station at 6:15 for a 6:30 start. We will then join the route just behind Banstead
Also just checking that we are all still happy to cycle back. On that thought does anyone have a GPS ?
Let me know your final thoughts and lets hope for some good weather
Cas

I'll be at Belmont for 6:15 I will def be riding back and have still got some print outs from last time I did this. In general if you head back towards Charlwood (nice cafe there) then you can go straight back in via Reigate or head over towards Box hill for one last climb. This was the route I did last time and although the drag along the sea front was not nice, it did mean you do not have to climb up out of Brighton. www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=3399
