I conclude that Barrie does not know best !!
In fact, Dave is the fastest up the Box Hill climb so far.
Barrie takes 6.23 seconds to haul up each of his kgs, followed closely by Tony, who takes 5.41 secs to carry each of his kgs up there.
The overall winner so far is Davebus, taking just 5.19 sec/kg to get him up there. Knowing Dave, he probably was on flats and had a ton weight in his Camelbak too !
Well done dave ! ;D

Might have another go next week if the conditions are favourable! My normal time up the track is around the 9.15-10.00 mark. So was really pleased with 8.29 but I think I might be able to shave a little off that.

Sounds like a good idea Huey, here's a picture that Terry took of me in Ryka's carpark, just before we rode up Box Hill...I think shaving the beard off will make all the difference! img41.imageshack.us/img41/4039/fatbus.jpg

Well perhaps I should have started a new thread, but there aint so much on this one, so I've started a new theme - single speed times. I've flagged the entry SS(single speed)32:17(gear ratio)(170)mm cranks. I'm liking this setup - I was running 32:16 with 165mm cranks last year and it was just too much for my weedy legs - the best I managed up box hill was with one rest stop. The worst was with 5!

Am I the only one still doing this? I'd pretty much given up all hope of improving on my times this year, what with all the rain and the wet leaves. But I happened to be riding up it last night and thought I might as well time it and got my SS time (just) under 8 mins, so really pleased with that - although slightly confused as I'd come to the conclusion that the best way to attack this climb is in the biggest gear you can spin all the way up in... However, there is not much between my time taking this approach on the Orange 5 and wrestling my singlespeed up it last night. Hmmmm..... Had a go at this tonight with Davebus, in fact I must confess I have had 4 goes at this over the last 2 months. All the attempts have been between 8.20 and 8.12. I just don't seem to be able to break that 8 min mark. Tonight was 8.12 Maybe its a age thing. I should have pushed harder tonight because I felt ok at the top. The other times my heart rate was getting a tad to high.

Took my new Genesis out for a spin this morning, and took in the Box Hill climb for the first time since April. Almost gave up at one point but then realised I was nearly at the top and found an extra burst of speed.
Is it just me, (and on a hard tail rather than my usual full sus), or has it got rockier since the start of the year. seemed like more of the top surface had washed away or something?

Nice one Felix.
Regarding the surface I expect it is partly the hardtail effect, but part of the challenge of that climb is the hard bumpy surface that makes it hard to get into any kind of rhythm, which is I think why my best time was on my full suss rather than the PA which is 3lbs or so lighter. And yes, it gets worse when it has been raining and you start to get gullies forming and loose gravel sections. I'm making it sound horrible. Why do I like it so much? I must be sick...

First attempt at the box hill off road climb this year. Only 2 seconds improvement on my best singlespeed time, but I'm pleased with that given the conditions

Having seen Dave set that time (well, not all of it, I was lumping along about a minute behind on my 32:18 SS!) I have to say that was a good effort!
My fitness has tailed off somewhat I think!

With 32:18 you'd never have caught him anyway I don't know about that Huey - my cadence wasn't exactly optimal. Also, are you implying that I wouldn't catch you if you did it in 32:16?

are you implying that I wouldn't catch you if you did it in 32:16? A moot point, but I'm a 36:18 man myself (I eat teeth). And hell, no! ;D

Hi folks, just had to add my time for the record, set last night. Very happy with it but a couple of visiting riders from out of the area beat me without even knowing there was any significance to the climb! Nice guys too!
So, mixed feelings really. But very happy with my own time set on my Orange Five:
