Those of you with a Ticker to monitor your riding distance etc, just add yourself to this page by replying. That way we have a place where we can see all the tickers together and follow the updates.
We only need to do it once
Im currently 1700km behind my over ambitious annuak target

I'm well behind plan.
First food posioning and now two weeks where work trips to Shanghai and Paris plus a weekend stag-do have meant April has been very slow month thus far.

I assumed we hadn't seen you on MTB weekends as you were out on the road bike putting in the klicks. Still, a work trip to those locations is at least glamorous. I go to Norway once a year but other than that its Coventry and Crewe!

Yeah, just been really busy generally. Most weekends this year I've only had one day free and often limited time on that day available, so have been doing shorter, faster-paced road rides as the best use of my time in terms of gaining fitness.
Really hoping to get out on a mtb ride soon, although won't be this weekend as I'm going to do the Wiggle "Up and Down" sportive on the Sunday..

Huey, talk us through your 'target' of 40 miles...

Shouldn't I "walk" you through it? (Did you see what I did there?) Waste of time, stick to cycling, it's way quicker and you can carry stuff too. To be fair, the initiative wasn't really aimed at people like me who are carbon neutral on the commute anyway, it was aimed at those folk who drive walking distances to work. Still, I did walk the furthest of those in my company

urock Woo-hoo! half way through my target of 8,000 km for the year and 26 days early too (I should be hitting this at the end of June but I will bank some klicks early in case it gets a bit less fun in November and December).
Oh and some more news. On this moring's commute Tower Bridge was 'up' and so I had to wait for an extra 7 or 8 minutes for a big ship to go thorugh. But it was a lovely moring to sit in the sun and the ship that went through was called the Prince Albert II !!!
On the downside, my riding buddy Norton at work got knocked off his bike on the eway home last night outside Kennington tube station.
Broken his wrist in two places
BMW, need i say more.

Good going Muddy
I turned over the 2000 mile mark yesterday - which is as much as I rode in all of 2009, and also the minimum miles it's reckoned one should have in one's legs before riding the Etape.
Don't think I'll do another 1800 km in the next month and half to take me to my 5k target, but shouldn't end up far off.

I have clicked up my 1000th mile this week. Not bad considering my family commitments and my short(ish) work commute! Here is a picture of my bike on todays' commute to celebrate ! Bloody traffic everywhere ;D

Been a good week for me on the ticker, passed the 4000 mark with the most km I've ridden in a week, (435km), longest ride I've ever done, (231km) and longest solo ride, (150km). I'm quite tired now!

Just got my Ticker sorted. Steady going but I'll have to pick it up to daily commutes rather than the 3-4 days a week depending if I can be bothered.
Time to man up eh?

An ex-pro cyclist on Eurosport was asked the otherday, how many miles a year a pro rides on average
Answer :
His avg was a staggering 25000 miles...not a lot of people do that in their car

That's about 500 a week then, every week. However, this is their full time job so they've got the time to do it! All the same, very impressive, especially if you look at their average speeds. Having said that I went to a lecture recently at the Epsom Playhouse and there was this very nice chap doing a talk. He rode 100 miles a day (sometimes more) everyday for 6 months, but he had 30lbs+ of kit and tent strapped to his (already) heavy bike. And he was on his own bunking in a tent every night and not a personal trainer or medic in sight, nor did he have an electric motor stuffed down his seat tube.

But he did it fro 6 month..then back to norml life Mark Beaumont's achievment is a great thing...specially as he climbed 2 major mountains either side...he did very well and I do enjoyed his expedition I dont however think 16 quid a ticket was a good price..

broke the 5,000 km barrier this morning! go me! Well done ..good effort Have you noticed that Felix and I are slowly creeping up on you..Actually if I wasn't in taper mode for the last 7 days, it would be sooo close. Hopefully I will catch you by the end of August btw are you thinking of counting those " cheating " lift enhanced rides in the Alps towards your total ?

I had actually, which is good cos it makes me get out on those mornings when i really dont fancy it btw are you thinking of counting those " cheating " lift enhanced rides in the Alps towards your total ? I hadn't really thought about it but now you mention it i dont see why not However, i dont think anyone ever has an odometer on a DH style bike so we wont be collating any data or guesstimating either

Its weird how having a simple "ticker" gives you motivation. On mornings when I feel lethargic and have little desire to leave the house earlier than I would if I were driving to work, I do think about my ticker target. Within the first mile I am thankful I pulled on my shorts and SPD's. It just totally comitts you to your total return journey mileage in an instant ! Had a good ride this morning, not having to be at work until 10am but still left the house normal time, thereby gaining an extra hour on the trails Found a great new route up to Smith and Western from Brockham - a nice gentle climb, courtesy of matt at the moles. Decided to do China Pig despite the rain last night - big mistake I got dumped off the bike half way down on an oblique wet route, quick as you like ! No damage done to me or bike thankfully, but a note to oneself to go easy down there when it's wet. Pleased on my way home to find trails had dried up a little and I manage to clear the High Ashurst climb again with relative ease - I think I'm building more fitness and strenght from my last 6 weeks of off road commutes. Well done to Rich for reaching the 5000km barrier - a great achievement which requires huge comittment and self motivation, especially on those wet cold mornings faced with London traffic - respect

Past the halfway marker today !!!!
It will be tough to do another 5k in the next 5 month, specially as the weather will be getting colder and the days shorter ...but I will give it a go
1000 km a month needed, so just about 250km a week. As I don't commute it will be a tall order.

Well done Cas - great achievment. I have 1500 miles to do in 5 months, so just 300 miles a month ! I reckon it's doable, even with a young baby and wanting wife ! Just a thought .................. as most of my commutes are off road onthe MTB, should I get bonus miles towards my ticker ?! One mile on the flat on a road bike is quite different to one mile of rooty singletrack BW across headley, boxhill and mickleham downs.

Any bonus is offset by the fact that you will be having far more fun bouncing over roots rather than me bouncing over London's finest (and possibly deepest) potholes on the FG!

harvey is right........however I would agree that 1 mtb miles is worth 1.5 road miles. If all agree we can use that rule

|
Post by muddyfox on Aug 24, 2010 15:36:39 GMT
Nope, a mile is a mile (or in km's if you prefer). No bonuses, no spinning no nothing.
Anyway, it's two thirds of the way through the year, you can't go changing rules now.
