I'm just looking for a few replacement components and came across this place www.bike-components.de/en/The prices for some components that I've looked for so far (e.g. SRAM XG1195 cassette) are very good compared to anything else I can find. e.g. £160 for the 11 speed cassette vs. £212 from Chain Reaction, Merlin or Wiggle. That's still hideously expensive for a cassette, but they are bloody brilliant and that's the price you pay for progress www.bike-components.de have got loads of good reviews, so I'm ordering from them. Worth a look for future reference, as an alternative to bike-discount.de or bike 24.de Jonesy

I often buy from Euroland if its cheaper, I've used my EU warranty locally thereafter with no issues.
I bought a new dropper post from Bike Components on Friday, it turned up today and &uck, I ordered the wrong one at 380 not 420mm, was thinking of posting it up on Pinkbike or STW to try and recoup most of my costs back. I didn't need to, they offer a postage paid return label FOC back to Germany for goods that are >40€, now that's what I call good service.
Alltricks.com and Rosebikes.com (not .co - more range at .com) are worth a look too

Alltricks.com and Rosebikes.com (not .co - more range at .com) are worth a look too As is Acycles (based en France). Bought some (cough) road (cough) wheels recently and even Merlin couldn't touch them for price.

I have used bikecomponents.de hibike.com and alltricks.fr a few times
Some really good deals to be had there. I got my pike for £200 less than the cheapest in the uk (including online)

None of this looks good for the UK retailer, whether it be online or high street!

None of this looks good for the UK retailer, whether it be online or high street! unless they up their game of course. Although Evans Cycles don't seem to be doing too bad over the last few years. I remember being really excited when I visited their two and only two shops at Waterloo and Waterloo Cut.

Ultimately its about price. If the price goes too low though, the service and customer experience will almost always suffer.

Its just case of customer choice for me. None of my LBS really stock anything I want when I want it, so I go online for these cheapest as it wont be a lot slower than a shop getting it in. Euro purchases for me have been no worse than some of the UK sellers. The only one I rate for speed and value is Merlin. Evans are pretty slow and none particularly near me. They do however do price matching on quite a few UK sellers and with quidco on top it works out OK, sometimes.
EDIT: I buy from Freeborn too mainly online, good prices and localish (10 miles away)

If you're not buying 'end of line' product, then it's always worth asking your LBS if they can get get close to the online retailers prices. Some are more amenable to this than others, but mostly they'd rather accept a lower margin and still get the business, rather than drive you to the online guys. This works pretty well for me, unless you're buying the heavily discounted end of line product which is often below trade price anyway.

Tried that a few times, the only one local'ish to me is Freeborn (20 mile round trip) they are worth talking to, they will always do a deal. Nearest retailer (well known in Cranleigh where I live) have asked the question a couple of times and response was RRP - only the big spenders of £5k bikes etc get a discount on parts, thats fine he has a business model that doesn't fit my budget... Cycleworks - I have asked them if they would price match (not beat) another Specialized retailer for a new bike - answer no, so bought it from www.bikescene.co.uk/ up north. I wish I had more accommodating shops nearby but sadly I don't :-( My next bike is likely to be a YT, given the strong exchange rate right now, my finger is hovering..... What retailers do you fellas recommend?

+1 for YT, great customer service and German efficiency. Also worth looking at Commencal as they've now gone fully direct, good prices and the Meta V4 looks very tasty.
Re. Lbs I use Bike+ in South Croydon. Nice bunch and they do price match within reason, especially on stock items

Being an ex-Kingston resident, I've used Cycleopedia in Surbiton for over 15 years. They've built up several bikes for me, and they always go a decent way to meet the online guys' prices ... because I've spent a lot of money there over the years. You have to build up the relationship ... a bit like marriage, really ... but not as expensive
