Hey Dawgs, so you may have noticed I have not been about much or leading any rides. Some of you know why, but if you don't this is just a heads up that I won't be back for a while so will be leaving the posting and guiding of rides to others. Basically I slipped my L5 and L6 discs in the summer and although after 5 weeks or so was able to ride again things were not right, so after the Wales trip in Nov I decided to rest it to heal up. All was going well until just after Xmas when a tear developed in L5. This was not fun. Luckily I don't need an op but more rest is needed and I won't be back on a bike in any meaningful way until April at the earliest. After I am back riding I don't yet know what that will mean, it might lead to a whole reinvention of what I do. Anyway that's why I am not around at the moment. I miss the riding but I've got plenty to keep me busy, and hopefully I will be just missing the messiest part of the year Keep the trails warm for me ! Ad

Good to hear from you Adam. Hope the back recovers quickly. Use the down time to polish and then sell any hardtail bikes you own :-) You know it makes sense.

I see a road bike and a regression to Lycra in your future!

Backs can be buggers and can take a while to sort out. Still, at least you're avoiding the slop out there just now. Get well soon & hope you're fighting fit for the summer.

I feel your pain mate, back problems are not fun. I broke two vertebrae in 1999 and that took me off the bike for a very long while but there's hope, look I'm back and riding worse than ever!! Keep your mind busy with the Pilates ladies and looking forward to seeing you back on the horse soon

I feel your pain, brother. Currently feeling the pain of herniated c6 and c7, for the second time. That's what motorbike racing and big mountain bike jumps gets ya! Hopefully will avoid the dreaded fusion op.
You'll be back mate. Just don't ever buy a road bike.
Pain only hurts if you think about it. That's what I tell myself and it works to a point

Rest up and take it easy! It doesnt take long to get the fitness back after a long lay off - just keep away from pies and beer!! Hope your recovery is a speedy one.

sorry to hear that dude, we spoke about it at the Xmas curry and i sympathise and can empathise with your position. I've suffered irregular back pain most of my adult life which I blame on my height and bad posture. fortunately for me it's never got to the point that yours has (and Fishybob's did). However riding 12,000km a year for the past 3 years (and 10k and 8k the two years before that), most of it hunched over a road bike has aggravated my back to the point where i needed to stop riding completely in October. Fortunately (again for me) i only needed two weeks off the bike. However, since then i have cut down greatly on my miles covered as you will see if you check my strava stats. It's a bit of a relief to be honest. I really enjoyed doing all that distance and proving to myself that i could do it but long term i was not doing myself any favours. I did feel at one point in October as if i was never going to be able to ride a bike again but that passed and the physio was superb. Now I am much more relaxed about how often and when I cycle and if there a rainy/sh*tty day or icy like the last two days I just gett he train instead of pushing myself. I'm sure you are getting physio/chiro assistance but it could be worth seeing someone like Alice (see details below) who is an Osteopath who is also an ex-pro cyclist. I know her parents who live in my road (Steve and Sally, a lovely couple who came along to my house for my 50th birthday celebrations) and Alice's USP is that she understands cycling related injuries as well as the need and desire to carry on cycling.
