Ok so fingers crossed, I'm on the move and will have a new man cave to deck out. So I need shelving, flooring, a workbench and bike storage. So for the shelving I was thinking of going homebrew with scaffolding and tube clamps or off the shelf (boom boom) with www.bigdug.co.uk/Flooring, either paint or get some of these pvc tiles plasfloor.mplsites.com/mototile.com/or go nuts and polish the concrete www.specfloors.com.au/images/con_polished/image_1.jpg. I was going to hang the bikes from the wall, something like :- static1.cyclestore.co.uk/products/xtra/6623.jpgI'm going to be here for a long time so don't mind spending some cash to get it right, I'm so bored of all my kit in a dodgy old garage. Any ideas, pitfalls, things to do? Cheers! ps There's going to be room for a 3d printer, can't wait!

Haha
I'm kitting my new garage out as we speak, I have a painted floor and walls! I've made a work bench out of a cutting of kitchen work top and have a old chest of draws for storage! All the normal garage stuff has gone in my loft (my garage loft that is lol)
I have two long tube lights on each floor
Just need to hang the bikes and get my turbo trainer in! I can also fit a camper van in (when I get one)
Got a contact at vw now so maybe not far off :-)

Exciting times! Your ideas are good so far and I guess my man cave is similar to what you're trying to achieve (although my floor is currently concrete but those tiles look tempting). Worth keeping some budget for security. I have a motorbike lock going through the bikes, secured to a wall anchor. Also Internet cctv and reinforced safety doors. And scary spiders lurking in the corners. If you have space then also plan to have a decent music system and a fridge full of beers, essential for long bike maintenance! Stevo's right, old kitchen units and worktop make decent storage solutions (where did you get that idea from ;-) Bisley metal office cabinets are also great for keeping bike gear and stuff.

Ooh , ooh Mr Beesley! I can do this. Empty margarine tubs, that's what you need. But sherioushly Mish Moneypenny... - Concrete floor? - check
- Bike storage on walls? - check
- Turbo trainer? - check
- old kitchen worktop and cabinets/chest of drawers for storage? - check (got all three)
- shelving? - check
- old CD player, TV and video? - check
- various large plastic stacking boxes? - check
- comfy old office/computer chair that is perfect for doing low down stuff? - check
- YMCA hard hat? - check
- bike stand? - check
In addition I've got: Just a shame about the fact I've got so much stuff in there it still looks untidy

I've got two of those. Rack itself is solid and fairly well designed, but use your own fixings, not the monkey metal bolts supplied. Don't underestimate the space required in front of the rack in order to remove/mount a bike.

Leed, up to you but I suspect furnishing your garage with a semi naked sweaty young man is not entirely necessary.

Meh, you are missing some of the most important fundamentals
calendars of naked women on walls, years unnecessary, breast size is the main criteria Water pistol, sling shot, air rifle racked next to door for the neighbour's cats, squirrels, crows etc, choose weapon depending on mood Baseball bat, (should already have one above front door and under bed) Large punching bag swinging from rafters in plain view when main door is open, ( this will make the local chav school boys you are a bit handy and refrain from calling you a gay wanker when your degreasing a chain wearing your wife's pink marigolds Shit tools on a rack, good, ones locked away including chisels to stop same wife from using them to open paint tins, Broadband to go immediately online and search how to fix a fork when its already in pieces over the floor, Superfast gaming PC so you can play call of duty 3 hrs non stop and not get interrupted, along with a high res 30" monitor which will also come in handy for those P.O.V blow jobs from the blonde college twins A big f*ck off 4" bench Vice A Dartboard, of coarse A small wooden box for your kids toys ( it's your man cave and their shit can stay in the garden where they left it)

Wobbem, that's not your garage, that's just your dream life isn't it?
Of course there should also be a secret place for your stash of Razzlers and Playboys from your Uni days that you've somehow managed to keep since your last house move. You know the sort of vintage material when the centrefold still had a hairy bush

Lee. I fully racked out my new garage with bigdug racking. Don't buy the cheap stuff though. Its dog turd. I got the heavy duty stuff. 600mm deep. 2 x 8 foot racks and a 6 foot workbench. I also added a 6 foot fridge, and filled it with San Miguel.
Decent lighting is also a must.
And to add to Wobs list, you need a chainsaw and a big f*** off axe. Every man needs a weapons store in the garage.

Excellent thread. Those floor tiles look good, not cheap though. For a bench, I read in a motorcycle mag that the ideal height is navel plus inch, so that's what mine is. I used a kitchen worktop, on fence post and 3x2. It's robust. Whiteboard for key torque figs/plans? Beer fridge and a a bike stand are a must.

a few more thought on this. some simple, obvious and doable, some not but worth stating all the same.
- Power in the man cave is a must. A couple of sockets at a minimum - running water would be a bit of a luxury but if you can get it then great - Wifi. I have a pretty good Wifi indoors (VirginMedia 100mb) and Sam managed to pick it up on his phone when he was on the turbo trainer (see above). However my iPad doesnt seem to receive the singal so I'm getting one of those Wifi powerlink things to plug into the mains and extend the Wifi range. - why do i need WiFi in the garage? Many reasons from playing music off the interweb (I'm using Amazon Music Player at the mo') to looking up 'how-to' youtube videos about home mechanic'ing - powered speakers with a jack to fit in your wireless device/phone/iPad etc so that you can get some decent sounds in there not some tinny output from your phone

Don't use carpet. Mine is covered in oil, grease and Stan's fluid and is probably a major fire hazard. Soon to be replaced with floor paint.
