Great advice Cas... thanks.
Rich... I take it that the hoods you refer to are the black plastic tops of the brakes and gear levers. In order to reach the brakes my fingers are down the sides and on the brakes which means that my thumbs are over the hoods as you call them. My weight is therefore on them which is whats causing the problem. The pressure on my palms is where my life line crease is.. my seat is not pointing down..

noooooooo...dont do it ....it was a joke
I used to have the same problem when I first started road riding...As u ride more 2 things happen..Ure stomach muscles become stronger ( which improved your balance on the bike ) and so you don't put as much pressure on your hands . And secondly your hands get used to it
In a few month you wont have that problem anymore.
So when are we going to ride?

Probably next Saturday is my next available date although I do have lights on my bike so if you fancy a night ride let me know as long as its not raining. I'd be happy to go to 40 miles next so if anything you know suits that sort of mileage without too much traffic but please expect to go slow.
Unfortunately I was ill all last weekend so couldn't join you and Richard on Saturday... although the mileage you did would have been too much for me.
Keep well... gary

Hi Gary
By flipping the stem you will have changed the angle that your hands rest on the hoods - have you tried correcting this by tilting the bars back a little in the stem?
Also, I always get uncomfortable hands when riding any bike so have to change my grip frequently, mainly due to pressure on that whatchamacallit nerve. e.g. on a road bike I hold the bars on top on long straights (when I won't need the brakes) and rest them on the hoods when I might need to - and use the drops too.

By flipping the stem you will have changed the angle that your hands rest on the hoods - have you tried correcting this by tilting the bars back a little in the stem? The angle for the hands will have changed, this is true, but the bars should not be tilted (nor the hoods moved further up the curve) to compensate. The section of the bar tops pointing forward should be pretty much horizontal, as should the lever tops. Besides - any excess rotation of the bar will compromise the position of the dropped portion and make this uncomfortable/unusable and increases the reach to the lever from the drops. Rotating the hoods so your hands don't "slip off" them is symptomatic of too long a stem, so replace this and get a comfortable position with the bars/hoods horizontal. You (both) could always swap out the bar for one with a shallower drop so you can reach this more easily, which will allow you to use it more often. As it's a Spesh you should already have the bar gel inserts, which go a long way towards making 200km day rides possible. Good quality gloves will also help - not your MTB ones either. Endura have recently brought out some (albeit summer) gloves with aerated gel pads which work quite well, though the fingers are pretty narrow on them so prove tricky to remove during or after a ride.

Thanks for the advice Dave and Huey.. will have a look at the gloves.. my MTB gloves make things worse and at the moment its more comfortable without gloves..

Yes Cas, on the same day or the next I posted a Happy Birthday message to Nemesis and you wrote the following: Happy Birthday
Saturday after next sounds good to me if Gary can make it. That might be a good time to give the single speed a go as well
I assumed therefore you weren't intending today but next week ( the 7th)... but then again there is a saying in my job which goes...
Never assume anything ... it make an ass of u and me..... miscommunication !!
See you next Saturday afternoon...
Mind you I really enjoyed my off road ride today..
Gary

How about a set of "Sheldon bars" ? These were designed and made by the man himself (God bless him) and gave him extra comfort and hand positions when required. They look silly though
