 now Barry Knows Better
« Thread Started on Oct 23, 2009, 12:58pm »

an update on the work being done to the end of BKB.

Now Barry Knows Better – making mountain biking work in the Hurtwood

Barry Knows Best, or BKB, as the Hurtwood trail is known to the mountain bikers who love its steep cliff face and knotted roots, is about to be made a lot safer for everyone. Now Barry Knows Better.

Thanks to a grant from the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s Sustainable Development Fund, a major realignment of the trail as it joins Ewhurst Road in Peaslake is now possible. The trail will still be a challenge for riders, but it will no longer be dangerous for bikes meeting the road, cars and other road users and people living in nearby houses.

The project will also prevent damage to the woods caused by bikes trying to find a safer alternative to the old route and reduces conflict with other users by avoiding a key bridleway.

The BKB project is another example of the Hurtwood Control Trust and the mountain bikers working in partnership to manage the increasingly popular sport in this much- loved piece of stunningly beautiful countryside. The success of this cooperative approach can already be seen on Holmbury Hill Fort, where trails have been redesigned and rerouted to protect sensitive archaeology and ensure the bikers can have fun without causing damage.

The challenge for the Trust is to accommodate all the users of the hill safely – walkers, horse riders, children, dogs and all the different types of bike users. Working with a small group of dedicated mountain biker volunteers is proving the most successful way to achieve harmony.

BKB is on of the most popular single-track trails on Holmbury Hill, with up to 50 bikes an hour riding it at peak times but its exit onto Ewhurst Road has always been a problem. At first it was too close to the houses and caused disturbance, but when the exit was moved further away, it proved too steep and dangerous for bikes and traffic. Braking caused damage to the hillside and bikes created myriad side-tracks as they tried to control their descent to the road, causing still more erosion.

The mountain bikers have investigated possible solutions for BKB. The exit can only be along a short stretch of road because of houses, and needs to be technically challenging to engage experienced riders and dissuade them from going off-piste. The answer is to make the trail longer by creating switchbacks that will provide interest and challenges, while ensuring the trail is sustainable, and will also mean that bikes join the road in a far more controlled manner.

Such major trail construction is beyond the scope of the Hurtwood Control Trust, but with the expert help of former Aston Hill trail builder Ian Warby of the Cyclists Touring Club (CTC), a bid for Sustainable Development Fund money was successful and an experienced digger team from Wales should be on site soon to sculpt the new section of the trail. The volunteers should finish surfacing the trail by the end of the year.

This initiative is being monitored closely by the Surrey Hills AONB as a possible prototype for a wider initiative right across the Surrey Hills. It is recognised that mountain biking is growing in popularity, and management in partnership with volunteer mountain bikers is necessary both to protect the environment and prevent conflict between bikers and other users of the countryside.

Good news for Nick ;)

Oi. Ill have you know it was a deliberate maneuver designed simply to demonstrate emergency eject procedures to newer riders...

Is BKB ridable at the moment. I've only done one ride on Holmbury and we only did the Yoghurt Pots and BKB that day. We're thinking about trying Holmbury out on Saturday.

BKB is rideable. The new trail will not be linked to the old until Sunday, perhaps Monday.

The old fall line beyond the bridleway will then be put beyond use. So if you want to ride down it or crash on it in Nick's case, for the last time, this weekend is the time to do it.

Maybe being able to say "Ah yes but of course I remember crashing on the old section" might be worth something in a few years time but I'll probably take a chicken line if there are any left :D

Thanks for the heads up.

looks great, cant wait to ride it - well done and thanks to all those that have made it happen [image]

As explained above, this is a collaboration between the Hurtwood Control Trust and the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s Sustainable Development Fund and I am sure that any MTB'ers who wanted to could make a donation to either of those groups for the work and cost involved. I am sure that most of us would not mind parting with a tenner or two to keep our trails sustainable.

However, would it not be a good idea to setup a MTB specific charity or trust with its own bank account? That way we would know that if we donated money it would be used specifically for trail building and maintenance or other MTB uses like promoting the sport and maintaining good relations with other Hurtwood user groups.

With 50 bikes an hour riding BKB at peak times thats something like 500 bikes a weekend. 1000 bikers contributing £5 a month would raise £60,000 a year to maintaining and expanding our trails.

I know i'd sign up and so would the rest of my riding mates.

Hi

I was up on Pitch/Holmbury last night. Great evening to be out BTW. We came back via BKB to have a last ride of the old finish. The new route starts surprisingly early on BKB, hence it's not just the end bit that's getting changed but quite a substantial amount. Looking at the spy shots it should be good since whilst the waterfall is a bit technical/white knuckle in the wet, it's a bit of a pick a line and go for it trail IMHO. Last night in the dry conditions it was a proverbial walk in the park.

Looking forward to the new BKBetter.

Tony

What you are suggesting Gary is divisive. Hurtwood have allowed the trails to be maintained and in some instances extended, but any money contributed to Hurtwood should be for the benefit of all users of the land.

fair'nuff, i can see that it might be viewed that way - you could also argue that allowing specific user groups to enhance their own facilities within an overall controlled and managed framework would be to the benefit of all - but i'll leave the politics to those in the know and stick to the riding!

good job anyways, however it was achieved - your hard work is appreciated.

I had a look at it this afternoon and it looks much better than I had imagined. Amazing how quick they've built what looks to be a fairly long bit of trail. Then again they've had a digger and crew there all week. Looks like it will flow really well, better than the new start of the bomb holes.

Someone has opened the new section, not sure if it was supposed to be open or not. If it's supposed to be still closed it needs some more tape and probably a new notice.

OK. I think it is official. There were signs at the top of the trail warning of changes to the end section and a log had been placed blocking off the old section.
It rides better at speed. The first run was a little tentative as my lights arent great and I didnt know the trail. I attacked my second run a lot more and it flowed a lot better. Its very smooth, but i think by the summer that would change, with braking bumps emerging etc. There are no exposed roots worth noting either so its just like a BMX track with trees in it. The new section is over very quickly, fizzling out into road very suddenly. Its definately not technical or as difficult as the old section but its good enough. The drainage must be excellent though as it was pretty dry and gave up a lot of grip whilst the top section up until the drop off was still very muddy

It's officially open and it does feel fast as you are not slowing down like on the old trail to come down the last bit.

Its got a definite trail centre feel to it. Some massive big berms, cant wait for a dry day. The top section is superb and is a better use of the gradient than the old rooty fall line. I can see what they are trying to do with the last couple of turns at the end, to try and slow people down before the road. But I reckon an off shoot track will soon appear heading in the direction of the old finish as people will want to keep their speed. There's also a fairly big stump which could claim a few victims who run wide at the bottom. All in all a great new addition!

I'm with you on that one Gary. So good we rode it twice. I've always detested Bkb because of that dreadful ending ruined by many years of ham-fisted rear brake locking. Now I just can't wait to get back there and have another go in the dry.

Top marks to MarkLH and his merry band of trail pixies [image] [image]

I will most def get off my @rse and volunteer next year.
